"The Year Clock" at St George's, Langham

"The Year Clock" at St George's, Langham
Saturday 19th April at 7.30pm
St George's, Langham, on the fringe of Gillingham is one of the few thatched churches in the country. Built in 1921 by the Manger family as a memorial to those who fell in the Great War, St George's continues to be maintained by the family trust. Lt Col William Bourne Manger, last of the name, died in 1954. Each year this tiny place of worship hosts only three services; Christmas, Easter and Whitsun.

Local people are keen to see the church brought in to greater use, not least to raise much needed funds for maintenance and repairs. (The thatch has recently been replaced at considerable cost.) To this end, Langham residents Lilian Modlock and Dick Docherty, with the support of the trustees, have organised the first of what is hoped will be a series of fund raising concerts. On Saturday 19th April at 7.30pm, the ever popular Tim Laycock will perform "The Year Clock", a one man portrayal of the life of the great Dorset dialect poet, William Barnes.

Born in Dorset in 1801, Barnes was a writer, teacher, poet and minister. He wrote more than 800 poems, many in Dorset dialect. He wrote of life and love in 19th century rural Dorset. He was a friend of Thomas Hardy and Alfred Tennyson.

His poem "My Orchar'd in Linden Lea", set to music by Vaughn Williams is movingly sung by Tim as part of "The Year Clock". A performance of the play in this unique and intimate venue promises to be most memorable. Tickets are very limited and booking is essential. More information may be obtained from Lilian Modlock on 01747 821875
